Philip Lucas

Lucia's first husband, to whom she refers as “Peppino” in the Italian manner. It's from him that she gets her nickname1). He was a barrister by trade2) but by the opening of Queen Lucia it looks like he had retired and they were living off their “sound investments”.

“Though Mrs Lucas's parents had bestowed the name of Emmeline on her, it was not to be wondered at that she was known among the more intimate of her subjects as Lucia, pronounced of course in the Italian mode (la Lucia, the wife of Lucas)” – Queen Lucia, chapter 1
“her husband amassed a fortune, respectable in amount as in origin, at the Bar” – Queen Lucia, chapter 1
